One of our perennial sports here in the UK Anime office is bemoaning the legal and licensing entanglements that prevents the releases of any anime bearing the Macross name in the west - a state of affairs that has shorn us of re-releases of absolute classics such as Macross Plus and Macross: Do You Remember Love, as well as more recent fits such as office favourite Macross Frontier.
It's an issue that clearly vexes the creators of the franchise as much as it does ourselves, and thus recent years has seen something of a trend towards placing English subtitles on at least some Japanese Macross home video releases. The Blu-ray remaster of the Macross Plus OVA and movie got them, as did the two-film Macross Frontier box set.
With a new iteration of the franchise now airing in Japan, we're both excited, happy and fearful for our wallets when we note that early listings for the Japanese Blu-ray releases of Macross Delta will, it seems, all sport English subtitles.
The eagle-eyed Gwyn Campbell has pointed out via Twitter that Amazon Japan is listing English subtitles for all nine planned volumes of the series on Blu-ray, with two other Japanese retailers also sporting the same information.
Of course, these details are very much subject to change - the first volume isn't due out until July 22nd - but at least we can hold out some hope of a legal recourse to get our fix of new Macross without the need to learn Japanese.
If you're so inclined, you can check out the Amazon Japan listings for the series for yourself.
