Over the past couple of years, we've seen Netflix make some interesting inroads into acquiring anime-related content above and beyond simply serving up content provided by others - we've seen both Knights of Sidonia and Harlock: Space Pirate appear as Netflix original, this December will see Smile Precure rebranded to appear as Glitter Force, and January will see the anime adaptation of Ajin: A Demi-Human serve as another so-called "Netflix original" series.
However, in an on-stage interview with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, a desire was voiced for the company to start producing its own anime content amongst other things, albeit with a potential primary view towards foreign markets (i.e. Japan itself) rather than western audiences.
"We're hopeful that we'll over time make a great Bollywood show, make a great anime show. It might not be that that Bollywood show is for [Showtime CEO] Matt Blank. It might be that it's more segmented, but again the Internet let's you do that. I think that's the key in that enablement. But as Matt knows, making these shows is very challenging and I'm sure we'll have issues over time."
It's an interesting prospect if it comes to pass, but would you like to see Netflix commissioning its own anime programming? Let us know in the comments, and you can read more over at The Verge.
