The anime adaptation of Tsutomu Nihei's Knights of Sidonia - produced as a CG series by Polygon Pictures - surprised many people by being snapped up for a streaming release as a Netflix exclusive (where it's still available to us here in the UK), in a scenario which also left us pondering what this might mean for a home video release moving forward.
Well, that question has now been answered - for North America at least - as Sentai Filmworks has confirmed that they have acquired the US home video rights for the show's first season, with a DVD and Blu-ray release confirmed as "coming soon". Plans are afoot for a Collector's Edition release of the series, and it's also been confirmed that this release will feature both English and Japanese 5.1 audio (with the English dub the same as that seen on Netflix) together with English subtitles.
This space opera - based on a manga available via Vertical Comics - has captured the interest of many via its story of a far-flung future where the Earth has been destroyed and humanity lives within vast spaceships crafted from its remains has plenty of sci-fi trappings for fans of the genre.
We'll be keeping our eyes peeled for any news of a UK licensing announcement in the future - if we were betting men (which we aren't), we might put a few quid on Animatsu Entertainment acquiring the series...
