I'm pretty sure that we all spent a portion of 2016 marveling at the success of Makoto Shinkai's Your Name, first in Japan and then further afield as its plaudits grew markedly, culminating in it picking up our very own UK Anime Reader's Choice Award for 2016 off the back of a strong theatrical showing in the UK.
Sometimes critical and fan acclaim doesn't translate into box office success for a film, but that certainly isn't the case here, as the film has now officially surpassed Spirited Away as the highest grossing anime film of all time - the movie has now netted a total of over US $290 million globally, $192.5 of that coming from the domestic Japanese market while $81 million came from the Chinese box office.
In the UK's own contribution to that tally, the film's theatrical release via Anime Limited on our shores itself netted a record-breaking £108,372 in a single day upon hitting cinemas, the record for a single day gross from an anime film in this country.
The film will be enjoying a wider US release later this year, and has also been submitted as a contender for Best Animated Feature at the 89th Academy Awards.
