ROD the TV Vol. 5
Date 19 Feb 2006
Volume 5 of ROD: The TV begins with an escape and soon pours on the revelations about Yomiko’s recent past, the machinations of the British library and the introduction of some deadly new enemies.
This disc was more sedate than most, with the action turned down a touch whilst we catch our breath from the previous volumes. That’s not to say these episodes are dull – in fact, they’re some of the finest so far, as layers of history are peeled away and everything you thought you knew about the British Library is turned upside down.
One of the truly interesting things about ROD is how it constantly redefines relationships between the characters. Joker’s secretary Wendy used to be a total ditz and devoted to Yomiko, but now she’s a ruthless killer, a totally different person from the OAV. Similarly, the charming Joker now has a sinister air and is clearly driven to achieve his aims at all costs, and such drama proves to be the driving force behind this volume and the four episodes spread across this disc..
That’s not to say we don’t have fights – Library agent The Mirror Man is dispatched to reclaim the Book of the All Seeing Eye from the paper sisters, and whilst the emotional truth is revealed at Yomiko’s countryside home, danger is closing in, leading to ROD’s customary paper-based battles.
If you’ve made it this far into the series then you’re going to love this. It’s moving, exciting and totally immersive. Everything the paper fan could want.
Extras include a gallery, trailers and commentary, which add some depth to an already excellent package.
Exciting paper based action with plenty of thrills and revelations to send chills down your spine!
