Tamagotchi The Movie

A human girl by the name of Tampopo is sudden transported to the Tamagotchi world after an experiment by Mametchi and his friends Memetchi and Kuchipatchi goes wrong. Both Mametchi and Tampopo are going to become older siblings and both are trying to figure out how to go about it. As the pair come together, they discover what it means to be an older sibling and help the people of Tamagotchi world.

If it isn’t quite obvious already, then you should realise that Tamagotchi is aimed at a much younger crowd - Think Pokèmon and you’ll be in the right area. With that in mind, anyone above the age of twelve is not going to find this the least bit interesting as the story is obviously very simple and cutesty. That’s not the say the story isn’t watchable, but don’t expect any horrible bad guys or the harbringers of death and destruction.

What is interesting is that for most of the film, the animation is actually pretty damn good and puts a fair few more adult anime to shame. The 3D animation itself is surprisingly good and actually melds incredibly well with the standard 2D animation. Mixing that with the bright, colourful world and the simple, geometric characters and you’ve got something that is quite a sight to behold. It won’t be winning any awards anytime soon, but it certainly is better than your regular Saturday morning cartoon.

The DVD is only in English, but considering the average age group for this anime would be below the age of 10, it may not be the best idea in the world to get them to read subtitle after subtitle just to hear it in its original Japanese. I’m sure if you are such a huge fan of Tamagotchi then you can wait for the upcoming TV series and take a long hard look at your life.

Overall it’s all very cute and cuddly - If it could be any cuter it would no doubt vomit rainbows and shine so brightly it would burn out your eyes with cuteness. Everyone learns a valuable lesson and it's so damn cute no one could hate it at all. As an introduction to anime for the younger members of the family as ‘My First Anime’ then you could do a lot worse than this compared to the nonsensical plotlines of Pokèmon. Just remember to say that it’s for your little cousin when you pick it up.
