Amazon Prime to stream Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress this spring

Amazon allegedly holds global streaming rights for the series

Recent years have seen video on demand giant Netflix entering the anime streaming sphere with a number of "Netflix original" series under their belt, and we've been hearing whispers behind the scenes for a little while that they aren't the only major player in that space looking to break into the business of delivering anime content.

Those whispers have now proved correct, with news that Amazon's video streaming service Amazon Prime have acquired the rights to one of this spring's major productions in the form of Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. This original series, airing in Japan on Fuji Television's noitaminA programming block,. reunites much of the talent behind Attack on Titan, with WIT Studio producing this Tetsurou Araki directed series which features a soundtrack composed by Sawano Hiroyuki.

The premise of the show revolves around a monster which creates undead creatures from those it bites and can only be defeated by penetrating its iron heart. A boy named Ikoma is determined that he will be the one to defeat this monster, and has even created a weapon to do just that, and events that transpire might just give him the opportunity he's been waiting for.

Head of Amazon Studios Roy Price confirmed on Twitter back in January that the series would be simulcast on Amazon Prime in both Japan and the US, but a more recent news story on German web site Animania claims that Amazon Prime has worldwide rights to the series, suggesting that the UK will also be able to see the show in this form.

There's no word on whether this streaming arrangement is an exclusive one, but it seems that we can welcome another player into the anime video on demand space, even if they're likely to be as selective in the projects they take on as Netflix.
