Fruits Basket anime remake announced

Reader prepare your nostalgia goggles as Anime news network brings us news of a new anime adaptation of Natsuki Takaya's classic series Fruits basket.

Based on the original 1998 -2006 manga series the series follows Tohru, an orphaned schoolgirl who finds herself moving into the Sohma household with its unusual family and an equally unusual curse - if any of the family is touched by a female they transform into on of the animals of the Chinese zodiac.

It has been confirmed that TMS entertainment (Baccano, Detective Conan, Lupin 3rd) will be handling animation, and Natsuki Takaya will be onboard as Executive supervisor. The new series will also handle the entire story, unlike the original 2001 series that, after 26 episodes, stopped at the halfway point.

Unfortunately none of the original cast will be reprising their roles (a move insisted upon surprisingly by Takaya herself) instead being replaced by:

Manaka Iwami (Tsuki ga Kirei, Maquia, Tada Never Falls in Love) as Tohru Honda

Nobunaga Shimazaki (Waiting in the Summer, Date A Live, Scum's Wish) as Yuki Sohma

Yuma Uchida (Macross Delta, Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans) as Kyo Sohma

Yuichi Nakamura (Fairy Tail, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind) as Shigure Sohma

Finally the article announced that Funimation had secured both the streaming and home video rights for the series (which, while guaranteeing a release on the Funimation NOW streaming site, means a physical release may be a while away).
