Gundam franchise to focus on Universal Century timeline

Written by Ross Locksley on 27 Oct 2024

General manager of Bandai Namco Filmworks Naohiro Ogata, was recently interviewed in Japanese pop culture website Mantan Web that while the company was actively working on Alternate Universe stories, it would be concentrating on the original Universal Century timeline as the focus for its stories leading into 2029.

The recent Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance that made its debut on Netflix to mixed reviews is one such example of expanding the scope of Tomino's original vision by adding new viewpoints to established events. The decision to use Unreal Engine for the entirety of the show also reveals how much Bandai Namco is willing to experiment with media to find interesting ways to present the conflict. He did make it clear that the next part of Gundam Hathaway, which was originally slated for 2024 but now looks likely to debut next year, would retain the original film's style.

With a new Crossbone Gundam manga slated for January, it's also possible that Bandai Namco might look into further adaptations of that era of the Universal Century, but no confirmation has been made at this time.

With simulcasts now almost a standard, we're looking forward to joining Japan on more Gundam adventures very soon!
