Mirai (also known as Mirai of the Future) has been nominated for an Oscar at the 91st Academy Awards to be held on February 24th.
Directed by Mamoru Hosoda (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) the film faces stiff competition from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Pixar's Incredibles 2 and Isle of Dogs directed by Wes Anderson.
The story of a time-travelling young girl who goes back in time to visit her older brother as a 4 year-old, the tale seems to have touched the Academy's heart.
Mirai joins other classic Japanese animated films such as When Marnie Was There, Spirited Away and The Tale of Princess Kaguya in receiving recognition.
