New Netflix anime for Winter

Written by Ross Locksley on 21 Nov 2018

Netflix has announced it's Winter slate of anime coming to the service as part of their Netflix Originals line, and there's some interesting titles to keep us going over the dreary, dark months.

Ingress (November 23rd)

Based on Japan's first augmented reality game (think Pokemon Go) there was Ingress, an anime-style game that was a worldwide hit. The story centres around a policeman named Makato who has the gift of psychometry, wherein he can read the memory of objects. While investigating an explosion, he touches a ring belonging to the only survivor, and witnesses a laboratory that houses the mysterious chemical "XM". Capable of influencing human behaviour, it's a dangerous weapon that is now central to a struggle to harness it's abilities.

Hero Mask (December 1st)

Another Netflix Original, the anime is produced by Studio Pierrot (Black Clover, Tokyo Ghoul), the series is written and directed by No Game, No Life's Hiroyasu Aoki. Not much is known about the plot details, save the following: “Now there’s a mysterious Mask before James Blood, and the man behind it is one that shouldn’t exist. What is the mystery surrounding this mask…? So begins an action-packed crime story set in a beautiful city!”

Neo Yokio: Pink Christmas (December 7th)

Jude Law, Jaden Smith and Susan Sarandon helped to bring some star-quality to this decidedly odd project for Netflix. Largely derided, that hasn't stopped this Ezra Koenig (Vampire Weekend) produced show from getting a Christmas Special.

Back Street Girls (December 12th)

After botching their latest important assignment, 3 failed Yakuza are ordered to either commit suicide or go to Thailand, have a sex change operation and become female idols. After a year of training, the trio return and successfully debut. Shades of Some Like It Hot for the Otaku generation perhaps?

Baki (December 18th)

Based on the long-running manga that started in 1991 and ending only this year in April - last seen on screens in 2001, its been a long wait for an update on Baki Hanma's epic quest to surpass his father as the world's strongest martial artist. In this series, 5 of the most lethal men on Death Row have gathered forces together in order to create a match in which they hope Baki will annihilate them to relieve them of their boredom. Baki and his friends will take part in the ultimate and most deadly fighting tournament the world has ever seen!

Tenrou: Sirius the Jaeger (December 21st)

An original concept by Keigo Koyanagi (Killing Bites, Made in Abyss), the series has already finished its run in Japan. Set in 1930, a group known as Jaegers hunt vampires - their number includes a young werewolf named Yuily, he plans to avenge the death of his village by hunting down creatures of the night and recovering the Arc of Sirius, a powerful and mystical artifact.

High Score Girl (December 24th)

Based on the manga started in 2010, High Score Girl is the story of Yaguchi Haruo. He's not much of a stud - he's not athletic, academic or particularly attractive, but he is a talented gamer. Known locally as "Beastly Fingers Haruo" (I'm saying nothing...) he is unbeaten until a girl called Oono Akira kicks his ass on Street Fighter II.
