Bandai Namco announce Freedom Wars Remastered

Written by Ross Locksley on 18 Sep 2024

Freedom Wars was a Playstation JRPG game from 2014 developed by DIMPS for the PS Vita. The Vita was a huge console for me personally, I have well over 100 games for it, which rather flies in the face of it being a console with little software. Freedom Wars was, along with games like Gravity Rush, Killzone, Sonic All Star Racing, Persona 4, Darius Burst and Uncharted, among the very best games on the system.

Born into a world where existence is considered a crime, you must work off your debt to society by fighting for your Panopticon (the prison that houses you). Together with your "Accessory" - an android that assists you and is fully customisable - you can play cooperatively online or locally to advance your Panopticon, earning money, resources and time off your sentence. You'll be fighting giant foes known as Abductors, which have captured residents of your Panoptcon, and you'll be charged with freeing them once you've felled the giant mecha.

The overall presentation of the game was always pretty stellar, so a remaster is an exciting prospect indeed. I never made much use of the online play, preferring to stick to the story mode, where you'll meet a young woman named Beatrice Anastasi, housed in a secret facility. Originally from "On High", a Panopticon in the sky with advanced technology, you follow the story and come into conflict with this superior force, unlocking secrets and conspiracies as you do so.

The game will release on January 10th 2025.
