Super Sentai rumoured to end after 50 year run

Sales no longer cover production costs

According to an article posted on Japan Wire, we learn the sad news that Japan's Super Sentai franchise is coming to an end after 50 years. The source is referred to as "a source familiar with the matter", so no official announcement has been made at this time. The BBC has also posted the update, so an official announcement confirming or denying the news should be issued shortly.

The Super Sentai series was originally created for Japanese audiences when Himitsu Sentai Gorenger was aired in 1975, establishing the model of five masked warriors, each with their own distinct colour, working as a team to defeat evil. New iterations were created each year, with the latest - No.1 Sentai Gozyuger - apparently set to be the last.

The format was embraced in the West when Haim Saban adapted the 1992 Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger series into Mighty Morphin Power Rangers which was released on August 28th, , 1993.

No.1 Sentai Gozyuger voice actor for TegSword Yuki Kaji has not been informed of any such move, posted on X by @Livedoornews, so we're treating this as a rumour for now.

Yuki Kaji

If true, this is the end of an era for many of us. While I was a little too old to really embrace Power Rangers (as an 80's kid Transformers was always my go-to even as it was dying) my 6 year old daughter is currently obsessed with them.

We'll update the story when we have official confirmation.
