Crunchyroll unveil slew of summer season simulcasts

Written by A. H. on 22 Jun 2016

We're used to Crunchyroll trickling out announcements when it comes to a new season of streaming anime, but the early hours of this morning saw them reveal a slew of titles as part of a blowout live stream.

Unfortunately none of the titles announced had details of which regions they'll be available in attached to them (or indeed when they'll begin airing), but given the service's proclivity for securing worldwide rights outside of Japan these days hopefully most, if not all, of these titles will find their way to the UK. We'll be sure to keep you updated with more details as they come in across the coming weeks, but for now, here's what to expect from Crunchyroll's summer season of simulcasts (with more certainly still to come!):

91 Days - During Prohibition, the law held no power and the mafia ruled the town. The story takes place in Lawless, a town thriving on black market sales of illicitly brewed liquor. Avilio returns to Lawless after some time away, following the murder of his family in a mafia dispute there.

One day, Avilio receives a letter from a mysterious sender, prompting him to return to Lawless for revenge. He then infiltrates the Vanetti family, the ones responsible for his family's murder, and sets about befriending the don's son, Nero, to set his vengeance in motion. Killing brings more killing, and revenge spawns more revenge. How will the 91-day story of these men guided by a tragic fate end?

Active Raid Season 2 - Set in a futuristic Tokyo, Active Raid tells the story of “The Eighth,” a rash and careless unit of power-armored police called the “5th Special Public Security Section’s Mobile Assault Division.” After the Third Quicksand Disaster sinks Tokyo into a quagmire, the city's reconstruction efforts are carried out using high-output, reinforced exoskeletons called Willwears. But they can also be misused, and to combat the crimes involving them, the National Police Agency establishes at its Kichioji Branch the Special Public Security Fifth Division Third Mobile Assault Eighth Unit, AKA Unit 8.

Alderman in the Sky - ALDERAMIN ON THE SKY is directed by Tetsuo Ichimura and features animation by Madhouse. The story follows the fictional history of the Katvarn Empire and the unlikely rise of Ikta Sorok - a lazy and lecherous young man - as the country's greatest military hero.

Berserk - Boasting a deep story, fascinating characters, overwhelming and intricate art, and an unparalleled creative flair, it makes a strong impact on reader hearts and lives. It’s a fantasy comic that has fascinated not only Japanese readers, but people all over the world, and is widely considered to be one of the leading comics of all time. Set in a world where swordplay, magic, and monsters run wild, it portrays the protagonist Guts’ magnificent way of life. Packed to the brim with top-notch action, romance, spectacular scenes, and drama, it is sure to entertain the audience!

Mob Psycho 100 - Kageyama Shigeo, a.k.a. "Mob," is a boy who has trouble expressing himself, but who happens to be a powerful esper. Mob is determined to live a normal life and keeps his ESP suppressed, but when his emotions surge to a level of 100%, something terrible happens to him! As he's surrounded by false espers, evil spirits, and mysterious organizations, what will Mob think? What choices will he make?

The anime based on the original story by ONE, the idol of the webcomic world and creator of One-Punch Man, is coming your way with animation by leading animation studio Bones!

Orange - During the spring of her second year of high school, Naho receives a letter. Its sender is herself from ten years in the future. Naho thinks it's a prank at first, but when the things written in the letter start to come true one by one, she realizes that the letter is telling her of events that will happen in her future. It tells her that she'll fall in love with Kakeru, a new student who transfers to her school... and that he'll die in the winter of his 17th year.

After learning the regrets and wishes of the 26-year-old Naho following Kakeru's death, what can the 16-year-old Naho do differently?

ReLife - Arata Kaizaki (27) quit the job he landed after graduation in only three months. His life did not go well after that. Now his parents are threatening to stop sending money, and want him to come back to the country. He has no friend or girlfriend to share his troubles with...as he hits rock bottom a strange man named Ryo Yoake appears. Yoake invites Kaizaki to join a societal rehabilitation program for NEETs called ReLife. This program uses a mysterious drug to make him look younger, and sends him back to high school for a year...

Sweetness and Lighting - Kohei is a single father and high school teacher who lives with his only daughter. A chance encounter brings him together with Kotori, one of his students. The three of them start to meet together to make meals. None of them know how to cook, but they all love delicious food! Sweetness and Lightning is a heartwarming and fun experience that you're sure to love!

Taboo Tattoo - "Tattoos" - ancient weapons that drastically enhance the physical abilities of their users, known as the "Sealed," allowing them to bring forth supernatural phenomena when activated through the charging of the user's own unique "trigger". When Justice Akatsuka (a.k.a. "Seigi") saves a man from some street punks, the man gives him a strange stone as a token of gratitude. The moment Seigi accepts it, a mysterious tattoo appears on his palm.

On his way home from school the next day, Seigi is suddenly attacked by "Izzy," a girl wearing a coat despite the warm weather. He fights back with the jiujitsu that his grandfather taught him, but Izzy's power overwhelms him, leaving his very life in danger... And so the battle begins, framed by a web of conspiracies and centering around Justice Akatsuka, the boy who obtained a "tattoo" by complete chance.
